at last! here is the result of 3 months toil at the printmakers. I've been wanting to print this for over 3 years and it feels really great to have it done. all in all there were 34 layers to print separately and 32 colours to get juuuuuuuust right. I started working on 100 sheets of paper with the fear I'd end up with an edition of 5 or something but actually it went surprisingly well and despite my over-critical eye I managed to get a final cut of 75.

I'm selling them over at my new shop for £165 +p&p. please note I'm waiting for a delivery of extra wide tubes so there may be a slight delay posting any orders received the next few days. all other prints can still be found on Etsy.

The Lindstrom Effect (and me)...

this is me by Vala of the unstoppable force that is The Lindstrom Effect. I absolutely love it. there's a whole load more including some medium format b/w ones she will make into argyrotypes - made direct from negatives on paper using the sun and some magic... I am an episode away from finishing BBC series of Brideshead Revisited... it's so perfect I don't mind I haven't read the book first and I admit I am a little bit in love with Jeremy Irons (c. 1981). it made me very happy to discover it has its own fuckyeah tumblr.. oh, Brideshead, jolly good!

I also just finished reading this collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald stories which I also loved (and I therefore conclude I was born in the wrong era and social class.)

no shock, just awe...

I can't think of the words to describe how much I love this. if ever there was a reason why you should never give up what you love doing (even when you're not sure you love it or are even convinced you hate it), this, for me, is it.

I always knew Robert was almost as good at painting as he is at being a friend but it's good to know I'm right.

Felice Varini...

I only recently discovered Felice Varini... how did this happen? for those of you who are also unaware, Varini creates site specific optical images - incredible feats of perspective. I wanted to post everything from his site - it's all awe-inspiring and often very beautiful.

here's the final result of the re-work (remember this) of an image I originally did for Canon Blue. it is an edition of 100, signed, numbered, archival - all the usual... for a limited time it's only $15 (about £10) +p&p

right. there's not much I can do about this but have a bit of a rant and let as many people know about this as possible. the bottom image is by Kelly Hyatt at Lagom for their Zootown range of cards. Kelly Hyatt has denied copying me in any way, which I find hard to believe. it seems this isn't the first time he's done this either - http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/?p=1952. I don't see how any self-respecting person could work like ths - but there you have it.

I have asked Lagom to remove the card from sale but as yet this hasn't happened.

UPDATE! I've just read the comments on the YTWWN blog article posted above. it appears Kelly Hyatt posted several comments as different people and there is a comment from 'foxbravo', the same signature on emails I received from a Tony Chambers who apparently commissoned the designs for Lagom (but Kelly Hyatt is the director of Lagom so I'm a bit confused as to who does what where...) what are they playing at? seriously - just don't copy people in the first place and you won't have this hassle.

I've also been threatened with legal action for slander. yeah...
I've been sent screen grabs of google image search of lion illustrations as proof there's a lot of lions that look like mine - I wasn't convinced.
an intimidating email has been sent to someone who left a comment here.
oh, and it was suggested that maybe I copied the lion from someone too.

and another thing... I was going to email the Print and Pattern blog to ask them to remove the image but then remembered Kelly told me he posted his own cards there and bowiestyle (Marie Perkins?) has previously described Kelly Hyatt as a 'design hero of mine', so I figured why bother - I had previously commented on the post of the card range about the lion being copied and it was removed. cahoots?...

and one last thing - everyone is entirely entitled to their opinion regarding this and are free to email whomever they wish HOWEVER I ask people not to send threatening/abusive emails to anyone. ta!

Mr. Lion will keep smiling through :)

29/08/10 I have noticed the card has been removed from sale - FINALLY. I would like to think of this as Kelly Hyatt admitting he has done wrong but unfortunately I think it's more likely he got scared about all the attention he was receiving and thought it easier to back down. admitting fault would require a sincere apology from him, but I won't be holding my breath for that.

although I appreciate that the cards are no longer on sale, the fact remains that even if Kelly HAD admitted fault from the start, I would still have written this post.

the solution to avoid this is simple - don't copy people's work in the first place.

the card is back on sale.

hello world!

so... my advice to you all is never to drink anything near your computer. EVER! I learnt that computer manufacturers are f*****s - it really should not cost more to replace a new component than to get a whole new machine should it? ANYWAY. I have a new one winging it's way to me and will be back to full computer/internet usage soon (and yes, catching up with Mad Men)... hurra!

In other news, I have been busy printing. 5 colours/animals down on the large version of Congeries (only 29 to go then...) and after a few trials, tribulations and yes, probably some tears, I finally managed to get the Sea Lion finished. it's possible I'll do him again at some point sans l'eau, but for now there's 20 wet ones up for grabs...

all in all there's 6 layers. 50x50cm on 300gsm archival paper. signed, numbered and all that and about £30 +p&p on etsy...

I've become quite stoic about things going wrong for me recently - I realise that compared to a lot of people my life is really pretty wonderful... I'll be donating £5 from the sale of each Sea Lion print (and 10% of all other prints) bought throughout August and September to Pakistan.

on this thursday last year I first saw Edinburgh. I came up for the launch of (the decidely awesome) We Are the Friction at Analogue Books and to stay with Jez and Lizzy who proved to be the finest hosts... so fine that I ended up boarding another train and taking root on their living floor just a couple of weeks later (and they promptly learnt their lesson).

a year later and I'm a fully fledged Edinburgher, a frequent but not permanent feature of the BurrowsStewart residence and a contributer to another show at Analogue, namely this...

I started eating fish a few years ago after being vegan for 6 years and though I began very conscious about the fish I bought, over time I admit my standards have declined. I've been getting some old films developed. this is Alfie. he's the closest I've ever come to having my own dog and I miss him. Alfie's talents include getting people to give him treats - he has the 'woe is me' look nailed. he likes to chew the faces off his toys - rips the eyes out and leaves a trail of stuffing all over the floor. if he hasn't seen you in a while he gets so excited he pees a little.

on Sunday, Lizzy and I put up this window display for Coco of Bruntsfield (my local/best in the world chocolate shop)... taking their Tattoo themed chocolate box as our inspiration we went all 1920's tattoo crazy. Lizzy made Claude (the most dashing tattooed man I've ever known) and I had an altercation with a swallow - we slept on it, reached an understanding in the morning and all became good...

p.s. working for a chocolate shop pays good dividends!

here comes the summer...

here's my 'new' 'studio' (/bedroom)... you might think it looks suspiciously similiar to my old one and you'd be quite right. BUT! look at the glowing new desk top and drawers. drawers are useful things eh? though it might help if I could remember what I put in each one... this new set-up has made a huge difference to my frame of mind and I'm sensing a new era of creativity around the corner... in fact I can just see it's nose poking out :)

ok, so the last post was maybe a little premature as it didn't actually take long to sort out and it's all working fine now. hoorah!

not too long ago I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Kirkham and Vivien McDermid, who were then working on a video for Benni Hemm Hemm's track Retaliate. well, I just found out via Lizzy that it's finished and I think it's really rather nice...

and I adore Vivien's illustrated short story which won her the Observer/Cape graphic short story prize last year.

Michael has some really nice images too, including this one which I love...

and finally, just so we're clear, this dress by Wiksten is beautiful and I would look great in it...

as promised, Robert and some country walking.
on Wednesday I saw Robert and Richard's childhood home. we ate some terrible cake, conquered Blackford hill like the real men we are, then ate some great cake. we rescued the pumpkin gnocchi recipe Arild sent us from disaster and ate so much our tummy's were full of rocks. we were certain Tesla didn't invent a cloning machine.
on Thursday we made some miracles happen and discovered a real cloning machine. the sun put his hat on and we climbed another hill.
we ate a lot more cake besides. and some japanese curry. and went to the best pub in Edinburgh (or possibly the world) with the ever-awesome Jez and Lizzy. Robert took some fantastic photos. he can take photos of me any time he likes.

had a nice Easter brunch at Katie's Mum's - polish style with vodka. there was a rabbit infestation - we will have to murder them and hide the evidence in our tummys. we went on a nice walk around the reservoir, the first time for me. we met a dog who was so happy she had hurt the tip of her tail from wagging it too hard. but we didn't meet any frogs.

i am looking forward to more country walking when Robert visits in a couple of weeks. so very eggscited!

cat nap...

a quick post before I collapse somewhere in a heap... I printed nearly 9 hours straight today. my back hurts and I'm a bit foggy. he's nearly done but the last layer started going wrong and I decided to call it a day before I did something I'd regret. BUT I'm heading back tomorrow and HE WILL BE DONE (or else you'll find me crying in some corner)...

Pogo...

I discovered Pogo on Kitsune Noir recently. Pogo makes music/videos using, sometimes solely, sounds/clips from films. Bobby posted the Terminator 2 track, which was impressive but not nearly so wonderful as this track made entirely from The Secret Garden. It gets thoroughly heartwarming towards the end...

screenprinting last week wasn't a complete success. gettting used to the process again and the set-up at E.P. slowed things down a little and i only managed to get the first layer down. i'm back there for a long session on the 1st April and hoping to get Mr. Lion finished then. forgot to take my camera along unfortunately, but here's the first layer on newsprint...

knitting update: i am making a shawl. not going quite as smooth as the neck warmer but it will have 'character' and i am learning to fix things i suppose.i am content so long as i keep the right amount of stitches and by some fluke i've managed it so far...

got some old skate decks from my friend Steve in Route 1 a while ago to paint on and finally got some sanded down thanks to James and his electric sander...

exciting news is that I recently joined Edinburgh Printmakers and have my first session there on Fri. I haven't printed since I left school nearly 2 years ago - after so long out, I'm filled with a little trepidation, but mostly I am really looking forward to getting back to it! first off I am printing Mr. Lion, of badge fame...

then I'm planning to do a screenprint of the Congeries in ALL the colours. I forget how many there are, around 30 I think. which is quite a lot for a screenprint. from today it is also available as a limited edition digital print from Pulptree.com

the start of something beautiful...

inspired by Sandra Juto and her beautiful creations, i have got the knitting bug once again and i think this time it's here to stay :) I met with the wonderful Vala yesterday for knit fika at our favourite cafe and i made a good start on a neck warmer from one of Vala's own patterns. blue + stripes of course!

last night i stitched 5 rows on the wrong side = ugh. but determined to get it right i (very very) patiently unstitched every one. right now i'm about half done and am quite proud of myself!...

also quite proud of my virgin harvest...

thanks to my good friend Jeremy I am no longer a gocco virgin... to celebrate the fact that my Oh! Deer prints are just about through (there's one left here), I've gone and done it again. but this time a more modest 18cm x 24cm gocco. 50 of them. I will photograph them tomorrow in daylight and get them up here and on Etsy. yep.

to all the people who read this in and around Leeds (don't all shout at once), you should go and see Lizzy's new exhibition at the art college on Blenheim Walk... next to the cafe to be precise. the private view was 5 hours ago (sorry) but continues until the 26th. Lizzy has worked so so hard and produced some amazing work. I really hoped to make it down, but with trains more expensive than planes these days...

and finally. tonight I rediscovered Danna Ray (who i originally stumbled across a few months back)... I cannot quite find the right words to express how much i LOVE her paintings. sigh.

cake mix...

Lizzy loves bears. i love Lizzy and baking cakes. throw a birthday meal in the mix and naturally this happens...

this is the first cake i have ever made that was supposed to look like something (other than just a cake that is). my lack of expertise in the discipline resulted in an abundance of various leftover sweet stuffs (shucks) and a nearly comatosed Verity from the unavoidable sampling during the 'editing' stage...

jaffa cakes, cola laces, minstrels and a flake made the cut. tea cakes and giant buttons gave it their all but were not successful this time around (fret not buttons, you'll be given a happy home!). natex savoury spread also, thankfully, did not make the cut - if it had it's unlikely this would have happened...

ok! these have been a looooooong time coming, but thanks to the patience of Martin at Cut-Tec - that man is most certainly an angel in disguise - here is the unveiling of my latest creation (fanfare if you wish)...

it's a badge! (/brooch)... they are listed as my first, and so far only item on my new Etsy shop*

*in creating said shop i had my bank card freezed for fraud and my mum had a heart attack when the automaton from 'Santander' (got to get used to that) called her house... i know my mum saw visions of her baby girl in prison, or living in exile, or maybe she thought i had knocked up some crazy scheme to pay her back all i owe (in which case she was kind of right, except the scheme is wooden lion badges, not bank fraud - not sure which would make her prouder really...)
